Do Aliens Really Exist: One Step Closer to Answering This Age Old Question?
On June 14th 2022, China’s state-run newspaper “Science and Technology Daily” released an article announcing that their Five-Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) detected potential signs of alien life.
FAST was built in 2016 as the world’s largest and most sensitive single-dish radio telescope, with its main purpose being to search for extraterrestrial civilisations. The chief scientist of China’s extraterrestrial civilisation search team, Zhang Tonjie, stated “the possibility that the suspicious signal is some kind of interference is also very high, and it needs to be further confirmed or ruled out”. Due to the high level of sensitivity, FAST is very responsive to low, narrow-band radio frequencies from Earth and often, radio signals from human sources are bounced into the telescope.
The announcement of potential alien life was received with more skepticism from Astrophysicist Sascha Trippe who claimed that “the detection of hundreds of ‘candidate signals’ in radio SETI surveys is quite common”.
If radio signals are constantly being detected, why was this particular incident different to others? Why was the article on ‘Science and Technology Daily’ removed immediately after it was published? After all, the question of whether aliens exist remains up in the “air”.
